GLOUCESTER COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Police said they have just unearthed the remains of a child on the property of the same home where they found a starving child left imprisoned in a cage.

On Thursday, the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office went to a home in the 8100 block of Carrie Lane in Hayes, Virginia on an unrelated matter. While they were there, they found a starving child left imprisoned in a crib, naked, and covered in feces. One of the investigators called the crib a cage.

Once at the home, investigators discovered the girl, 5 to 6 years old, was being held in a modified crib with a piece of wood covering the crib, imprisoning the child. The child was covered in feces and was in the nude, according to a news release from the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the girl appeared to be extremely malnourished suffering from severe starvation.

On Friday night, police were digging for clues into the abuse part of the investigation when they found the remains of a child in near shed on the property. There is no word on the age or sex of the child. The body will go to the chief medical examiner's office for autopsy to get the details of how the child died.

Deputies said the girl who was left in the modified crib was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital Emergency Room and then transferred by ambulance to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. She was admitted to CHKD and is listed in stable condition.

Doctors from CHKD told police that if they found the girl a week later, the child would have been dead.

The child's parents, Shannon Gore and Brian Gore, were charged. Brian Gore, 29, was charged with felony child abuse. Shannon Gore, 25, was charged with felony child abuse and attempted capital murder.

Deputies said there was a 1-month-old boy at the home who was in good condition.

Both children were taken into protective custody by the Gloucester Department of Social Services.

Shannon Gore is being held without bond at Gloucester County Jail. Deputies released Brian Gore on a $1500 bond Friday but re-arrested him Saturday morning. The Gloucester Sheriff's Office would not release the charges on Brian Gore but said he was in jail.

The case remains under investigation by the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Social Services.
