ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - A young girl with a passion for outdoor activities was severely limited in her actions by a life-threatening disease, until a foundation stepped in and gave her a very special gift.
Zoe Dietemeyer's love for the outdoors is clear upon first meeting her.
"She loves to go hiking in the woods, she loves to swim," Zoe's mom said. "She loves to do everything."
Four-year-old Zoe is in the second year of her treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
"It's all about germs and staying fever-free and staying as healthy as possible," Zoe's parents said. "You don't want to be around anyone who's sick, you don't want to be around anyone who can contaminate you."
We Promise, a foundation whose mission it is to make dreams come true for children struggling with life-threatening, debilitating or chronic illnesses, donated a play set to Zoe.
Zoe's mother recalling recent activities with the play set brought joy Zoe and her family.
"We run and jump and play, blow bubbles, play hide and seek... we hid Easter eggs around it for weeks!"
As of September, Zoe will have one more year left in her treatment. Her mother tells WAVY.com Zoe is doing "amazingly."
