Forbes, Wittman work on bill after cuts

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - The House Armed Services Committee says it is working on a bill to lessen the impacts of the Sequester.

Committee members Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) and Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA) say they're aiming to relieve some of the cuts to the military.

Forbes and Wittman  told WAVY.com the committee is working on a continuing resolution.

The bill would allow the Navy and Defense Department to use funds where they need them the most, instead of being restricted to the cuts.

"The continuing resolution would allow us to put money into specific places in the defense budget so that the Navy can refuel the aircraft carriers that they have in line to be refueled," Wittman said.

"[I'm] optimistic we'll have a continuing resolution with anomalies in it which will help mitigate many of the harsh effects that we're hearing that could impact Virginia," Forbes said.

Wittman said the bill should be on the floor by next week.
