NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Ten firearms were confiscated from carry-on bags at the Norfolk International Airport last year. In 2011, that number was five.
According to Karl Morrisette, the acting federal security director at Norfolk International, the numbers also jumped nationally from 1,300 to 1,500.
"They could be arrested, which frequently happens," Morrisette said. "In cases across the country, some 800 people are arrested on firearms charges. [In other cases] they're subject to a regulatory fine."

The fine can range anywhere from $200 to $11,000. Morrisette said most people say they "forgot" to leave weapons or other banned items at home.
Morrisette said the best way to avoid fines or even getting arrested is knowing exactly what you have in your luggage.
