NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A driver struck two people - including a woman in a wheelchair - as they crossed Jefferson Avenue Saturday night and one of them has since passed away.
Newport News police spokesman Harold Eley said the driver of a Honda Accord hit a woman in a wheelchair with her fiance riding on the back of it at the intersection of Shields Road about 7:20 p.m. The couple was crossing Jefferson when the 82-year-old female driver going south on Jefferson Avenue hit them in the right lane.
The man, identified as 30-year-old Brian McGuire of Irvin, TX was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at 1:44 a.m. His fiancee remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
No charges are currently pending, according to police.
