VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Pet owners got out with their dogs Sunday to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Teams from across Hampton Roads took part in a one-mile Bark for Life walk in Virginia Beach. The walk honored canine companionship for cancer survivors with dog games, a top-dog dress up contest and food for everyone.

The Churchland Animal Clinic and the North Suffolk Animal Clinic teamed up to raise more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

"We truly appreciate the incredible outpouring of support that we have received from pet owners and community members," said a clinic representative. "We are thrilled with our successful fundraising efforts, and encourage pet owners to join the cause or give what they can in honor of the special canines in their lives. We are passionate about furthering the American Cancer Society's goal of a world with more birthdays and less cancer."

The American Cancer Society holds the September 30th fundraiser annually.
