JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - The James City County Police Department says crews pulled the body of 18-year-old Trevor Times from College Creek Tuesday morning.
Maj. Steve Rubino with the James City County Police Department told WAVY.com College Creek off Colonial Parkway is a popular spot, despite the signs warning people of a strong rip tide.
According to Rubino, Times was swimming with a group of friends to a sandbar when witnesses on the beach saw him go under water around 2:15 p.m.
Times was found at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday about 35 yards offshore in about 6 feet of water.
Times was a senior at Jamestown High School, Rubino added.
Students and faculty gathered at the flagpole at Jamestown High School this morning at a vigil for Times.
According to Mariah Sutton, a senior at Jamestown High School, swimming out to the sandbar at College Creek is a common pastime.
"Everyone does it all the time," Sutton explains. "I guess the current was just way too tough for anyone. I guess something happened and he went under."
A helicopter with the Coast Guard searched the area along with police, fire, marine patrols and dive teams during the search and rescue and recovery operations.
The search was suspended at 8:15 p.m. last night as it became too dark. It resumed Tuesday morning, as police officers on foot were keeping an eye on the shore line, but not actively searching the waters.
