GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) - The Gloucester community gathered Thursday evening to remember three young boys and their grandmother who lost their lives in a house fire last week.

Thomas, 7, Michael, 2, and 6-month-old Gabriel died in a fire at their home on Summerville Drive earlier this week. Their grandmother, Virginia Grogan, tried to rescue the boys from their bedrooms but never came back out.

The community has come together in the last couple of weeks to help provide emotional and physical help to the surviving family members. They helped raised more than $1,600 during Thursday's event.

"That's what Gloucester is," resident Polly Harrison said. "It is a sense of community. It's a sense of family."

Thursday's fundraiser was held at Chick-fil-A on George Washington Memorial Highway.

"Everyone certainly felt so much for the family," resident Sue Dail said. "The tragedy was totally unbelievable. I think that everybody felt a tremendous heartbreak."

The community wanted to show love to the Grogans. The fire not took away four lives, but destroyed everything the family owned.

Other events fundraisers to help the family can be found on The  Grogan Angles-Memorial  Facebook page.
