Chesapeake homicide victim identified

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Chesapeake police are conducting a homicide investigation in the Great Bridge section of the city after the body of a 26-year-old woman was found Sunday morning.

Police and medics responded to the Kingsbridge Apartments around 11 a.m. Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene. She has been identified as Rachel M. Abshire of Chesapeake. 

No other details have been released by police.

Fear has settled in at the apartment complex where police found Abshire's body. Neighbors are so frightened over the discovery that they did not want to identify themselves. One woman told WAVY.com her mother lives just a few doors down from where police found Abshire.

"It's scary, and concerning. It's really just too close to home," she said.

The fear amongst neighbors only got worse Sunday afternoon when they started comparing what they heard and saw around the crime scene.

"There was a gentleman that came down to the main corner of the neighborhood he was on the screaming, 'She's dead. She's been killed; there's been an accident," one neighbor said.

Investigators say they found Abshire's body in apartment 11 A. 

"Knowing that there is even a thought that something this dramatic happened is horrible. It's really scary," one neighbor said.

Another neighbor recalled Abshire's kindness.

"About a year ago I went into labor. My car wouldn't start. Me and my husband knocked on her door and she didn't hesitate to help us. It was very nice. We had just moved in. We didn't know anybody," she said.
