CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A temporary safety zone at the Intracoastal Waterway for all recreational and commercial maritime traffic
near the Gilmerton Bridge has been lifted by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard re-opened the maritime channel after a five day closure that began on Jan. 7 to accommodate the Gilmerton Bridge lift span float in and the span's connection to the tower structures, according to a press release from VDOT.

The bridge remains closed to vehicular traffic until January 20 as crews prepare the new span.

VDOT recommends that travelers use the I-64 High Rise Bridge or the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge as alternate routes.
