CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A local veterinarian has donated vests to a police department's K-9 unit to help working dogs stay cool during high temperatures.
K-9 dogs are used by police when responding to crimes, including pursuits, narcotics busts and missing persons. Frozen gel packs inside the vests will help cool the dogs for well over an hour.
"In this kind of heat, it depends how strenuous their exercise is [until they get exhausted]. Sometimes it's between 15-20 minutes," Veterinarian Jeff Klemm said. "If they are pushing it, they can get overheated. Plus, if [they] are younger or older dogs, it can be harder on them. They can be more sensitive to the heat."
Klemm has been taking care of the Chesapeake Police Department's dogs for five years and donated a vest to each dog on the force.
"Our cars run 24/7 when the guys are working just to keep the the dogs cool," Sgt. Ward Rhoads said.
