CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - An 18-year-old man was shot and killed at a house party in the South Norfolk section of Chesapeake early Saturday morning.

10 On Your Side spoke with victim Deonta Cartwright's family about his death. They believe Cartwright died trying to shield others from bullets.

Cartwright's home was once filled with laughter, and jokes. Now Carwright's home is filled with heartache and pain.

"He was always laughing, and joking. He was the life of the party. He was cool," said Latoya Gibbs, Cartwright's older sister.

"My son is gone. He was 18-years-old. His life was just beginning,"said Clayte Cartwright, Deonta's Mother.

Cartwright's life came to an end on the 900 block of Butt Street where he was attending a house party.
His older sister Latoya Gibbs was at the house party, and saw what would be his last moments.

"Somebody came back banging on the door. He thought it was one of his friends trying to get back in and he opened the door.  And he was shot in the head," said Gibbs.

Cartwright's friend Nicky, in fear of retaliation, asked 10 On Your Side to hide her identity. In an interview Nicky says while everyone else inside the house ducked for cover Cartwright tried to shut the door to shield everyone.

"If he just worried about himself he would still be here instead of worrying about everybody else. It's just sad," said Nicky.

Cartwright's mother is heartbroken. In her grief she is trying to hold onto the memories of her youngest boy, while trying to let go of the son she knows will never come home.

"I just keep sitting here thinking he's going to come through the door. But in my heart I know, he gone," said Cartwright.

Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding this deadly shooting to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
