CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Students at Western Branch High School returned to class after being evacuated for a gas leak Friday morning.
Fire and HAZMAT crews were called to the school around 8:30 a.m. for a reported smell of gas in one of the classrooms, according to Chesapeake Fire Department Capt. Mike Theibault.
Crews arrived and worked with school officials in evacuating the building. Students were reporting to class as the evacuation was in progress.
Theibault said school maintenance crews worked with the HAZMAT team to isolate and stop the leak, which was on the roof. An air handling unit pulled the smell of gas into the building.
The students returned to class around 9:30 a.m.
The fire department is remaining on the scene for additional monitoring.
