CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - An overnight shooting in Chesapeake left one man injured and two families scared after stray bullets hit their homes.
One of those bullets almost hit a sleeping child. Others just missed a 66-year-old woman, who did not want to reveal her identity, but told WAVY.com about her close encounter with the stray bullets.
"About three or four. They just came all at once...bang, bang, bang, bang, bang," said the woman, who WAVY.com will refer to as 'Jane' for the purpose of this story.
Chesapeake police say the shooting happened in the Harbour North apartment complex near Channel Place around 1 a.m. Saturday. Police say a man was shot in the stomach and is expected to be okay. The suspect is on the run.
Jane says she got out of bed in the early hours of Saturday morning to get a snack from the refrigerator.
"I went to get me one of these, because I was hungry," she said, holding a cup of yogurt.
But before she could open the yogurt, bullets started flying through her kitchen. They hit the front wall. They hit a framed painting. They hit the fish tank. And, they almost hit Jane as she crawled underneath the microwave.
"If I had just stood up when I passed that microwave, it would have got me," she said.
Witnesses in the apartment complex say two men were shooting at each other in the courtyard. They say both were running on foot, which might explain why a bullet hit a window several buildings away.
A woman who answered the door at that apartment told WAVY.com the window is in a child's bedroom. The woman said the bullet just missed the sleeping child's head.
Jane said she had not heard other homes were affected.
"I come from a praying family, and I mean, I must have had some praying on me last night," said Jane. "Standing here with all those bullets coming through that wall."
Jane says it's more important to count blessings than bullet holes. She says material things can be replaced, like the microwave. She happened to have a spare ready.
"I got that out my closet," said Jane, with a laugh.
Police are still looking for a male suspect who fled the scene. If you have any information, call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
