CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A man pleaded guilty to killing two people during a hostage situation in April earlier this year and is facing a maximum of two life sentences plus 83 years in prison.
According to Nancy Parr with the Chesapeake Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Charles Collins of Pollicksville, N.C. pleaded guilty to two charges of first degree murder in the deaths of Michael Temple and Derwin Watts, II as well as multiple firearm and abduction charges.
WAVY.com spoke with Tanisha Watts, Collins' ex-fiance, following the incident on April 22 in the 1300 block of Canal Drive, who said Collins was jealous of her new relationship with Temple when he broke into her home that morning.
"Michael left the bedroom to go into the restroom, going down the hall to the restroom and I heard a noise and it was pop, pop, pop, pop," said Watts.
Police said Collins shot Temple, who died a short time later. Watts said she then realized Collins was in her apartment and heard him barricaded the door with her couch. She says her son Derwin "DJ" tried to help her escape.
"My baby died because he was trying to stop Charles from shooting me as I was going out the door. He tackled Charles, and I could just see out the corner of my eye they were tousling and then I heard the shot," Watts said.
Derwin died at a hospital from his gunshot wounds.
WAVY.com uncovered that since 1997, Collins's convictions include assaulting a woman on two separate occasions. He served jail time for multiple larceny counts, breaking & entering, and drug charges.
Collins will be sentenced Jan. 28, 2013.
In addition to the murder charges, Collins pleaded guilty to four counts of abduction, five counts of use of firearm in the commission of an abduction and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of murder.
