CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man ejected from his vehicle was found dead off Interstate 664 northbound at Bowers Hill.
Virginia State Police and Chesapeake Police responded to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. August 29. Michelle Anaya with VSP says a Virginia Department of Transportation patroller noticed a utility pole down at the Bowers Hill exchange. Anaya says the worker then saw a black 2003 Ford Explorer down an embankment.
The man has been identified as Erwin V. Williams III, 49, of the 3000 block of Golden Oaks Lane in Chesapeake.
Anaya says the vehicle ran off the road to the right, struck a utility pole and became air born. It fell 75 feet down an embankment, ejecting the driver who was declared deceased at the scene.
Initially, Anaya reported the accident occurred either early morning Aug. 28 or the night before, but upon further investigation she said the accident happened Sunday, Aug. 26.
Police say the cause of the accident is still under investigation and it is unknown if weather played a role.
Anaya says Williams was reported missing to Chesapeake police on the morning of Aug. 28 and was reportedly last seen Saturday, Aug. 25.
