CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A room inside of a Chesapeake church sustained damage following a Wednesday afternoon fire.
According to Capt. Scott Saunders with the Chesapeake Fire Department, crews were dispatched to Rapture Bible Training and Worship Center, 1425 Gust Lane shortly after 2 p.m.
Saunders says crews did not notice smoke at first, but later noticed light smoke coming from the back of the church. One room toward the rear of the church was on fire. Saunders says the fire was under control at 2:48 p.m. and the room found aflame was damaged.
There was no one inside of the church at the time and the building was filled with smoke as a result of the fire.
Saunders says the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental; an electrical space heater came in contact with combustibles.
