CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Officials say 16 cats were injured and nine passed away in a Chesapeake house fire Wednesday evening.
According to Capt. Scott Saunders with the Chesapeake Fire Department, crews were dispatched to a home in the 200 block of Scarlett Drive just after 7 p.m. for a fire at a single family home.
Following further investigation, Saunders said approximately 50 cats total were found inside of the home, 18 of which were injured and 11 of which passed away. One dog was also onjured in the fire. The injured pets were taken to a nearby veterianrian's office.
Investigators say only the animals were inside of the home during the fire. The home was labeled as unlivable due to hoarding issues, but Saunders said the owners would come back daily to feed the animals.
Saunders said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
