CG medevacs 2 from grounded boat

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WAVY) - The Coast Guard medevaced two people from a boat that ran aground off the Intercoastal Waterway in Morehead City Saturday morning.

Around 9:30 a.m. a crewmember on the 34-foot boat contacted Coast Guard watchstanders to report that the vessel had ran aground near Spooners Creek with four people on board, two of which sustained injuries. One man suffered a head injury while the another hurt his back, according to a press release from the Coast Guard.

A 25-foot boat from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon, N.C.  responded to the scene and was able to remove the two injured crewmembers from the boat. The pair were transferred to a crew from the Morehead City Fire Department and transported to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.

"Thanks to our close partnership with the Atlantic Beach Fire Department, we were able to embark emergency medical services personnel aboard our boat and provide more-timely medical attention to the injured crewmembers while en route to the marina," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Matt Nelson, the Coast Guard coxswain.

A third crew member was then retrieved from the boat while a fourth remained with the vessel to assist with salvaging the grounded vessel.
