HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk was one of the only Hampton Roads cities that did not cancel fireworks on the Fourth. But the damage is done. Not only did the Independance Day storm leave a lot of people inside on what is usually a fireworks filled night. It left extensive damage is one neighborhood in Newport News.
Newport News resident, Jason Wells, said, "It sounded almost like a transformer blowing I saw a flash of light out front."
He said when he looked out the window he couldn't believe the storm had caused a huge tree in his back yard to be uprooted.
Wells said, "I looked out the window and I shut-em again because I thought I was seeing things."
During the peak of the Monday evening storm, Dominion Virginia Power says 27,000 customers lost power. Leaving only one light show in town, Norfolk.
Steve Allen, who is in charge of the Newport News fireworks said, "When we were out there on the water we were ready to shoot."
But a day later in Newport News this show is back in business.
Allen said, "You can see it's kinda angled and it shoots up like a fan and it will do back and forth like that."
Steve Allen is the man behind the fifteen minute fireworks show set to go off on this "Fifth" of July.
The Newport News Fire Department said since 2002 the show has only been stopped one other time, but Matt Meech a resident we spoke with says even if it's a day late he's excited for the barge of fireworks to go off.
"I'm excited to see what they have there tonight," said Meech.
"It's going to be an outstanding show. It's going to be the best out here tonight," laughed Allen.
