PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A 13-year-old Boy Scout was rescued by good Samaritans from the Chesapeake Bay Saturday morning after his sailboat capsized approximately a half mile from Kiptopeke State Park near Cape Charles.
A good Samaritan in a kayak found a capsized sailboat around 10:30 a.m. with a person in the water. The good Samaritan contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at Cape Charles and they dispatched a 25-foot response boat to the scene.
When the Coast Guard boat arrived they found that good Samaritans in a 30-foot center console boat had rescued the 13-year-old Boy Scout. The good Samaritans then took the 13 year old back to shore, according to a press release from the Coast Guard..
The Coast Guard remained on scene until a troop's scout master arrived to salvage the sailboat.
"The generosity and situational awareness of the boaters who assisted the Coast Guard in this case can not be understated," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Daniel Eisenhard, a member at Station Cape Charles. "They did the right things by calling the Coast Guard quickly and staying on scene. The fact that the Boy Scout was wearing his life jacket also ensured a happy outcome to this case."
There were no reports of injuries, according to the release.
