Appliances stolen from empty homes

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say thieves have gotten away with stealing more than a dozen large appliances from Newport News homes.

Since October, six refrigerators, six stoves, four dishwashers and a washer/dryer set have been stolen from empty, recently renovated homes.

One neighbor told WAVY.com she saw people with a flashlight accross the street from her home but did not think anything of the incident since she knew the house was up for sale.

"Every now and then I'd see people viewing the house or workers over there," the neighbor said.

All police know is that moving these appliances likely takes more than one person and a big truck.

"We got a red truck in one, a GMC, another with a white SUV, but we can't really narrow that down to any particular suspect or suspects vehicle," Newport News police officer Tom LeNoir said.

Police say this is a first of its kind crime spree in Newport News, but now that neighbors are aware of the crime, police hope a suspect description will soon be available.
