HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - It's estimated that one in three mom has a tough time getting diapers for their babies. That's why Anthem HealthKeepers Plus is kicking off a Diaper Change campaign. The drive will provide diapers to low-income families in the Hampton Roads area.
Through July, interested businesses can either collect money or run a diaper drive at their agency. Anthem will provide all the supplies for the drive, and will pick up collected goods each week.
According to Health Promotions Consultant, Tresserlyn Jones babies in low-income household often spend an entire day in a single diaper. Inadequate diaper changing increases the risk of many health problems, like skin disease and hepatitis.
Jones said, "People who receive food stamps or wic, they get food but often times they do not have diapers and diapers are extremely expensive."
Single mom Sade DeLoatch is excited about the program because any help in cutting the costs of diapers will only help her daughter, London.
"She needs them and she's definitely going to use them so it will help. It will definitely help me a whole lot and will save me a little bit money and it will go [to] something else that she needs," said DeLoatch.
