ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A glider plane crashed in a wooded area in Isle of Wight County Friday afternoon, according to state police.
On board was only the pilot, 63-year-old Michael Henry Creamer. State police say a battery located behind the pilot lit on fire.
Creamer then made an emergency landing short of the south end runway. His hair on the back of his head was singed by the fire, but there were no other injuries.
Nearby airports reported that, at the time of the crash, winds were blowing at about 10 mph from the northeast with a scattered layer of clouds at 7,000 feet.
