GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - A Poquoson teen died and two others suffered injuries when their SUV went off the road on Interstate 64 in Goochland County Friday evening.
Trooper J. Snyder with the Virginia State Police said the accident happened at 5:23 p.m. Witnesses told police the teens' Mercedes went off the left side of the interstate while passing other vehicles. The driver over-corrected to the right, which again sent the vehicle off the left side of the road. The SUV then hit an embankment and overturned.
Medics pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Snyder identified him as 18-year-old Rhys Tyler Riftter. An air ambulance flew an unidentified 17-year-old male to the Medical College of Virginia with life-threatening injuries. Snyder said the teen no longer has life-threatening injuries but suffers from serious spinal trauma.
Doctors at MCV treated and released a third passenger, 18-year-old Timothy Watson.
Snyder said the driver was not traveling fast enough to constitute reckless driving. None of the teens were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The accident remains under investigation.
