Storm tracking goes high-tech

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Reporting damage during storms in Norfolk is as easy as using Facebook and Twitter with STORM technology.

STORM, which stands for System to Track, Organize, Record and Map, is a web-based application which makes it easy to distribute storm information and damage reports.

Residents share the information, the city to records it and uses it to get crews out to those locations quicker.

"The idea behind it was to bring all related events in a storm into one central location accurately and to be able to display them on a map for the public to see," said Fraser Picard who developed the program.

During an emergency, the city's website has a direct link to "I-View," where the information is recorded.

Red dots mean flooded streets, broken traffic lights have green dots and for damaged buildings, the dots are purple.
