WASHINGTON, D.C. (WAVY) - Two Virginia congressmen have been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee.

Two major subcommittees in the House Armed Services committee will be chaired by representatives from Hampton Roads, an area heavily dependent upon defense spending.

Fourth District Congressman Randy Forbes (R) has been appointed to chair the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee and First District Congressman and Rob Wittman (R) will assume Forbes' former position as chairman of the Subcommittee on Readiness.

"So we now have the two top subcommittees on the Armed Forces Committee that would be impactful for Virginia and for Hampton Roads," Forbes said.

Wittman said the appointments also serve national interests.

"We always put the nation first but I always say what's good for the nation is also good for Virginia," Wittman said.

Virginia should also benefit from having 2nd District Congressman Scott Rigell (R) appointed to a seat on the Conference Committee to negotiate a final agreement on the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act.

Rigell has also been working for compromise on the national budget in an effort to avoid sequestration.

"I go where the numbers lead me and it certainly leads me to the conclusion expenses have got to come down.," Rigell said. "I've also come to the conclusion that in a proper ratio, revenues have to come up a bit."

On a Senate level, Forbes said he and Senator-elect Tim Kaine (D-Va.) have already been talking about how they can work together on defense issues.
