Woman protests school's fundraiser

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Suffolk woman says she is upset school administrators are not allowing children to sell chocolate candy out of a fundraiser catalog.

Patti Jarriel says she wants school administrators to apologize to students at Driver Elementary School.  The 300 plus kids are involved in a fund raiser. Students were told they could not sell the chocolates because it violates the school's wellness policy.

Jarriel called administrators to check on this.

"They told the children when they gave them the book they could not sell the chocolate," Jarriel said.

Assistant Superintendent Kevin Alston told WAVY.com the school is encouraging healthy habits.

"We try to discourage the sale of items that don't meet the wellness policy." Alston said. "We're not letting the children sell it but its possible it could be ordered."

Jarriel has created protest signs to use when walking in front of the school before and after classes.

She says she wants administrators to apologize to the students and plans to continue her protest until the fundraiser ends later this week.
