First Lady campaigns in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - First Lady Michelle Obama campaigned for her husband President Barack Obama at Hampton University Friday afternoon.

Ms. Obama emphasized her husband is worthy of re-election, appealing to female voters and military families.

"We believe in keeping our priorities straight," Michelle Obama said. "Everybody here knows good and well that cutting Sesame Street is no way to balance our budget."

Although she kept the mood lighter, Ms. Obama emphasized her husband's passion to invest in education and infrastructure.

"We know better than that," Ms. Obama continued. "We know that we have to cut wasteful spending but we also have to make smart investments to things like education and infrastructure for an economy that's built to last. That's exactly what my husband stands for."

After her speech at Hampton University, Ms. Obama headed to a campaign event at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

Former president Bill Clinton will campaign for President Obama Saturday in Chesapeake and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will campaign in Newport News Sunday.
