NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Someone has stolen 25 heating units from vacant apartments in Newport News, and they’re worth a pretty penny.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com the thefts occurred between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30 at the Newsome Park Apartments. The units are worth $2,585.77 each, totaling nearly $65,000.

According to Thurston, the HVAC systems have two parts: one is an outside part while the other is inside. The inside part is being removed.

Copper is among other metals inside the heat pump. At this time, police do not know if the units were scrapped.

Anyone with information should call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
