Gunshot victim dies in hospital
Possibility of accident still remains

ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) - A 17-year-old critically injured Monday afternoon when he suffered a gunshot wound has died at the hospital.
According to Kristin Wilda with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office, deputies were alerted about a possible shooting at 4 p.m. Monday in the 5400 block of Old Stage Highway.
The teen, identified as Deandre Jamar Thomas of Smithfield, passed away just before 10 p.m. at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Deputies are calling the shooting "unexplained." Wilda said a small handgun was recovered at the scene and there did not appear to be a struggle or forced entry into the home.
Wilda said deputies think the shooting may be accidental, but have interviewed several people who may have been in the area at the time. The incident remains under investigation.
