PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A 17-year-old boy has been convicted of raping a teen girl inside a stairwell at Churchland High School at the end of May.

The incident, which was said to have been caught on the school's surveillance system, happened May 30 during school hours. The mother of the victim reported the incident to police and the then 16-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with rape.

Thursday, the teen was convicted during a hearing at Portsmouth Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, according to Bill Prince with the Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

Family members told WAVY.com shortly after the incident that the whole ordeal was just a misunderstanding. They said the victim and suspect had been in an on again, off again relationship for nearly two years.

Prince added the teen will be sentenced on Dec. 13.
