PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man was able to get change for $360 worth of fake $20 and $100 bills at a Portsmouth gas station.
According to Jan Clark with the Portsmouth Police Department, the suspect entered the Amoco Gas Station in the 4100 block of George Washington Highway Feb. 6 just after midnight. He asked an employee for change for five $20 bills. The employee complied, not knowing the suspect had used counterfeit bills.
Clark said the same man accompanied by another suspect came back to the same gas station the next day at approximately 3 a.m. and asked the same employee who was working the night before for change for one $100 bill and eight $20 bills. The employee again complied.
Later that day, Clark said the employee checked the bills given by the suspects and discovered they were counterfeit by using a detection pen.
