SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Suffolk woman will spend eight years in prison for her role in her step granddaughter's death.

Kimberly Artis was sentenced Monday in Suffolk Circuit Court. She received five years to serve on an involuntary manslaughter charge and an additional three years for child abuse with serious injury.

In the summer of 2011, prosecutors say 2-year-old Destiny Riddick ate what she thought was candy, while she was in Artis' care. The candy dish actually contained suboxone, which is used to treat opiate addiction.

Destiny was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Artis pleaded guilty last September. Steven Bullock, her boyfriend and the child's grandfather, was sentenced in December to more than seven years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, child abuse with serious injury and drug charges.
