PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - A stabbing victim who was already treated and released from a hospital in Norfolk has died, weeks after the incident.

Police say 24-year-old Kelvin Jones of the 2200 block of Queen Street in Portsmouth received a stab wound in the upper chest area following an altercation in the 1100 block of Virginia Avenue, also in Portsmouth.

Police say the altercation originated as a fight between two women, and Jones had attempted to break up the fight. Before Jones was able to separate the women, he was assaulted by several other men, including juveniles.

Jones received a stab wound in this fight and was treated and released from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to police. He returned to the hospital on July 9 with complications from his injury, and died while he was at the hospital.
