NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Police are searching for a man who robbed a local dollar store Saturday and say it isn’t the suspect known to sport a fake beard.
Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department said the robbery occurred just before 9 p.m. Saturday at the Dollar General located at 5920 Jefferson Ave. A man who had previously been inside the store just minutes before asked for the manager and told her he was there to rob the store.
The man was able to flee the store with a plastic bag full of cash from a cash register.
The suspect has been described as a black male standing between 5’5” and 5’8” and weighing between 150 and 160 pounds. He is believed to be in his late 20s to early 30s and was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, jeans and a baseball hat at the time of the robbery.
Eley said he wasn’t wearing the hat the first time he went into the store and was captured on the store’s surveillance footage.
The suspect does not fit the description of the man who has robbed numerous stores in the area wearing a fake beard.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
