NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Hampton man is charged with assaulting a pregnant family member with an iron during a domestic incident on July 16.

According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, officers responded to a home in the first block of Cedar Lane for a domestic incident. When they arrived, they learned James Wilbert Hunt allegedly struck a pregnant family member with an iron, leaving visible injuries.

Hunt also damaged property at the residence and also broke a cell phone as the victim tried to call police, Thurston said. Warrants were then secured for two counts of assault on a family member, one count of damaging a communications device to prevent calling police, destruction of property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Thurston said Hunt took a firearm as he left the scene.

Five days prior to the incident, a separate warrant for assault on a police officer was filed for Hunt. Hunt was arrested and transported to jail.
