PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Police are investigating a bank robbery not long after the skies began to clear following Hurricane Sandy.

Jan Clark with the Portsmouth Police Department told WAVY.com the robbery occurred just before 9:30 a.m. at the Suntrust Bank located at 4016 Victory Blvd. A male suspect implied he had some sort of explosive and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect then reportedly left an item outside the bank as he left the area on foot.

According to Clark, because of the suspect’s implication, the Virginia State Police's bomb squad responded to assist in the investigation. The area of the bank was secured as of 4 p.m. Tuesday and police say explosive items were not found.

The suspect appears to be an older white male between 40 and 50 years of age, about 190 pounds, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans at the time of the robbery. He has a mustache and was wearing sunglasses.
