PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Police say a 5-month-old child was found dead in a vehicle by his parent.

Jan Westerbeck with the Portsmouth Police Department told WAVY.com police were called to the Children's Harbor Day Care, 620 London Street, at 3:49 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Sharon Salyer lives close to the daycare and says she heard a man yelling, 'my baby, my baby!' behind a gray van.

"He went to the back door of the van and got the baby out of the car sear and was holding it to his shoulder," Salyer said. "I said, 'I can do CPR, let me have your baby.'"

Salyer says the baby's eyes were open when she lied him on the ground.

"I knew in my mind that baby was dead but I knew that I had to do something too," Salyer said.

Westerbeck says preliminary investigation indicated the infant was left in the vehicle for several hours.

"It wasn't something that happened in our center," Toni Cacace-Beshears, owner of the daycare, told WAVY.com "It wasn't something that happened in our care of the children."

Daycare administrators tell WAVY.com the father of the infant did have a child enrolled in the daycare, but wouldn't confirm whether or not said child was the infant found in the vehicle.
