PD: Man holding baby resists arrest

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A man is facing felony child neglect charges after allegedly assaulting two officers who were trying to serve misdemeanor warrants Wednesday.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department told WAVY.com an officer saw a man he knew had outstanding warrants on file in the 800 block of 36 ^th Street around 5:30 p.m. The man, identified as 24-year-old Justin Broddie Gibbs of Newport News, was holding a 2-month-old child and went into a home.

As officers confirmed the warrants, Gibbs came out of the home, still holding the child, Thurston said. Officers told him he was wanted and Thurston said Gibbs tried to go back inside.

Still holding the baby, Gibbs allegedly physically resisted officers’ attempts to arrest him. Officers tried to take the infant from Gibbs, who refused and continued to resist until a friend took the baby, Thurston said.

At that time, Gibbs reportedly hit and officer in the chest and kicked another in the legs numerous times.

Gibbs was finally taken into custody and charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, misdemeanor obstruction of justice, misdemeanor resisting arrest and felony child neglect in connection to the incident.

The outstanding warrants Gibbs had on file were for misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor destruction of property.
