ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) - Police say local funeral home officials could face charges for burying new graves on top of old graves.

According to Capt. John Young with the Elizabeth City Police Department, human bones were found amid newly dug up earth at the Old Oak Grove Cemetery on Peartree Road March 14.

Young said the bones found were from an unearthed grace in the cemetery, found by a lawn care maintenance worker.

Police are conducting an investigation and say the cemetery's owners and grave diggers could be charged with opening a new grave in an old grave site and failure to register a new burial with the city.
