Teen called mom minutes after shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The mother of a 13-year-old who was gunned down in Newport News this weekend says her son called her within minutes of being shot.

Quintonia Chisholm said her son, Lamonee Johnson-Chisholm, and a friend were on their way Sunday afternoon to meet up with two girls. Police say both boys suffered gunshot wounds; Johnson-Chisholm was shot in the back and his 15-year-old friend was shot in the arm while walking near the corner of 31st Street and Orcutt Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

Chisholm said her son had called her at that moment.

"I said, 'Where are you?' and he said, 'I'm on Orcutt Avenue in front of Huntington Middle School.' He said, 'You gotta come find me.' [I said,] 'I'm on my way,'" Chisholm said.

Chisholm said she then took off running with her cell phone in hand down the street to help her youngest of two sons.

"I got there and he was laying there. So I laid there with him. I kissed his face over and over and I said, 'Mommy's right here. I'm right here. I love you,'" Chisholm said.

Chisholm said she arrived to the scene before police.

"They picked me up and took me across the street and said I could not come back across the line. I looked over and saw them pumping his chest. I lost it. I ran back over to get him and they put me in handcuffs in the back of the car," Chisholm said.

From there, she says she watched the very last moments of her son's life. Police don't know what led up to the incident or who pulled the trigger.

"That was my baby," Chisholm told WAVY.com. "He would have been 14 in 30 days."

10 On Your Side also spoke to the 15-year-old victim's mother. She says her son is at home recovering, but is devastated about the loss of his best friend.

Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department says the shootings happened at a different location from where the teens were found.

"II just want justice for him," Chisholm said. "I want justice for him. No matter what happens he's never going to walk back through the door, you know."
