Man convicted in '09 McDonald's robbery

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A federal jury convicted a Hampton man for his role in a 2009 robbery of a McDonald's, during which he and an accomplice forced employees into a freezer at gunpoint.

According to Peter Carr with the U.S. Attorney's Office, 24-year-old Melvin Rushing was convicted on charges of conspiracy and robbery and could face up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in May. He is also facing a possession of a firearm charge.

Rushing and an accomplice robbed a Hampton McDonald's restaurant May 6, 2009. The two men forced the employees into a freezer at gunpoint and then fled the scene on foot. 

Rushing is facing additional charges in connection with a 2010 murder/robbery in Hampto n.
