PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Police have arrested a man in connection to an early morning shooting along Columbia Street.
Jan Clark with the Portsmouth Police Department said officers reported hearing gunshots in the 500 block of Columbia Street around 1:30 a.m. On scene, officers found a suspicious male, identified as Isaac Deberry, leaving the area and detained him.
According to Clark, a 34-year-old man was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body. He was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he remains in serious condition.
Investigators say Deberry approached the victim as he was leaving his home and began shooting at the victim for unknown reasons. Deberry attempted to leave the scene following the shooting, but the quick response of responding officers led to his arrest, Clark said.
Deberry has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Clark said officers found a handgun and a mask during Deberry’s arrest.
