NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man has been arrested for assaulting and raping a Newport News woman early Wednesday morning.
According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, a 33-year-old woman reported to police shortly after 10 a.m. that she had been held against her will and raped in an apartment close to her own on 73rd Street.
Thurston says the victim told police she met the suspect, 29-year-old Scott Neal Metzbower, Jr., around 1 a.m. and went with him to his apartment. She says Metzbower then locked the door of the apartment, refused to let her leave, used a knife to assault her and committed a sexual assault.
A uniformed officer returning home from court was in the area and was able to respond to the scene quickly.
Metzbower has been charged with one count each of rape, abduction and assault with a knife in the commission of a felony.
Thurston says the case is ongoing.
The mugshot attached is from two years ago when Metzbower was charged with possession of marijuana, public intoxication, shooting in a public place and possession of a firearm by a felon. All four counts were ruled nolle prosequi and were not further pursued.
