Mailman sprays dog with pepper-spray

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A mailman was served with a animal cruelty warrant last week for spraying a Rottweiler with pepper-spray while delivering mail that day to a home in Virginia Beach. 

According to Wayne Gilbert with the Virginia Beach Care and Adoption Center, the dog was on a front porch behind a secured gate while 55-year-old Jun Alazas was delivering mail to a mailbox in front of the home.

Alazas then allegedly pepper-sprayed Mike Clement's dog, Lexi.

"She's great with kids, she's great with everybody and that's what was crazy," Clements said. "All my neighbors can't believe it. There was no barking or anything. All I heard was a yelp. I came out of the front door and she's gasping for breath. I [smelled] the pepper-spray. I [saw] him putting the pepper-spray up."

Because of the distance between the mailbox and the dog's location behind the gate, Alazas was served with an animal cruelty charge.

"He said he has been bitten before so I told him, 'If you're scared, I don't need my mail,'" Clements said. "It's not that important."
