PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A Portsmouth inmate who walked off a work crew along Green Street Wednesday was found hiding in a closet about 20 minutes later.
Lt. Lee Cherry with the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com the inmate was part of a work crew when he disappeared around 2 p.m. Deputies received a tip that he was at a home along Center Avenue.
Deputies found him inside a closet only about 20 minutes after he went missing. Cherry said he pulled the inmate out of the closet and took him back into custody.
The inmate has been charged with escape without force, which is a misdemeanor. His name has not been released.
It is unknown why the inmate was originally incarcerated.
