NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News woman says she managed to get away from her husband after he began strangling her.

Officers were called to the 200 block of North Avenue on the evening of Sept. 26 for the report of a domestic assault. When they arrived, a 28-year-old woman told them she was in bed when her husband stumbled onto the bed, landing on her leg. She said they became involved in a scuffle and he began to strangle her. She managed to break free, but when she tried to call police, she says he grabbed the phone from her. She ran to a friend's house and called police from there, according to spokesman Lou Thurston.

William McTheny, 28, was arrested and charged with one felony count of strangulation of another, assault on a family member and preventing another person from summoning law enforcement, fire or rescue services, both misdemeanors.
