Inmate caught after two days on the lam

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Hampton Police caught and arrested escaped inmate Michael Dontae Stanback Thursday evening.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jason K. Price said officers arrested Stanback at a home in the 400 block of Reed Street without incident around 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Crime Line tips did not aide in the arrest, he said.

Lt. Alonzo Cherry with the Hampton Sheriff's Office told WAVY.com Wednesday Stanback escaped from a recreational area at Hampton Correctional Facility sometime Tuesday afternoon. Cherry said the Hampton Sheriff's Emergency Team assisted in apprehending Stanback.

Stanback, 28, of Newport News, was sentenced to 14 years in prison Sept. 5 for an armed robbery of a bank.

Stanback and three other alleged accomplices robbed the Navy Federal Credit Union on Fox Hill Road in November 2008. When the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, officers were able to locate the vehicle the men were driving.

Investigators told WAVY.com the suspect vehicle slid into a police cruiser as its driver attempted to make a u-turn. Officers recovered the stolen money from the bank as well as three handguns.

Stanback pleaded guilty in a Newport News courtroom to escaping custody Nov. 14, 2009. Stanback was arrested the same day he ran from an officer and was sentenced to 12 months in prison, 11 of which were suspended.
