Former teacher indicted for child porn

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -  

A former Virginia Beach teacher has been indicted on a charge of possession of child pornography.

According to Neil MacBride with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Michael Shanklin, 38, of Virginia Beach was indicted by a federal grand jury on the charge. The indictment says a computer belonging to Shanklin contained at least one image of child pornography.

Shanklin, a former teacher at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, recently pled guilty to spanking a student during a tutoring session at the school. He claims he felt the student needed to be punished for not finishing an assignment and was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery in the case.

Shanklin will face a judge in December on a charge of felony abduction in connection to the same incident.

If convicted on the child pornography charge, Shanklin could spend up to 20 years in prison.
